Filing a roof insurance claim in Illinois can feel overwhelming — especially when you're already dealing with the stress of storm damage. Between understanding your policy, dealing with adjusters, and finding a trustworthy contractor, the process has a lot of moving parts.
We've helped hundreds of Illinois homeowners navigate this process successfully. This guide walks you through every step so you know exactly what to do — and what to avoid — from the moment a storm hits to the day your new roof is complete.
Before You File — Know Your Policy
Before you pick up the phone to call your insurance company, spend 15 minutes reviewing your homeowner's insurance policy. There are three things you need to understand:
- Your deductible — the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance covers anything. In Illinois, hail deductibles are often separate from your standard deductible and can be a percentage of your home's insured value rather than a flat dollar amount.
- ACV vs RCV coverage — Actual Cash Value pays for your roof minus depreciation. Replacement Cost Value pays the full cost to replace it with a comparable roof. RCV coverage is significantly better and worth having.
- Filing deadlines — Most Illinois policies require you to file within 1 year of the damage. Some require notification within 30-60 days. Don't wait.
If you have ACV coverage and your roof is more than 10 years old, your payout after depreciation may not cover a full replacement. Talk to your agent about upgrading to RCV coverage at your next renewal.
Step-by-Step: Filing Your Claim
After any significant storm, walk around your property and take photos and video of everything you can see — damaged shingles, dented gutters, damaged siding, broken windows, and any interior water damage. Date-stamp your photos. Don't make any repairs yet — wait until after the adjuster has seen the damage.
Before you call your insurance company, get a licensed contractor to inspect your roof. A professional inspection gives you an independent damage assessment that you can use during the claims process. At Integrity Pro Roofing we provide free inspections with a detailed written report. This report is your documentation when the adjuster arrives.
Call your insurance company's claims department or file online. Have your policy number ready. Describe the damage and the date of the storm. Ask for your claim number and the name of the adjuster assigned to your case. Keep notes of every conversation including dates, times, and what was said.
Your insurance company will send an adjuster to inspect the damage. Request that your roofing contractor be present during this inspection. This is critical. An experienced contractor knows what to look for and can point out damage the adjuster might miss or undervalue. We attend adjuster meetings for all of our customers at no charge.
After the inspection the insurance company will send you a Scope of Loss — a document listing everything they agree to pay for and how much. Review this carefully with your contractor. If items are missing or the amounts seem low you have the right to dispute the scope.
Disputes are common and they are not the end of the road. Your contractor can provide a supplemental estimate documenting items that were missed. If the dispute cannot be resolved you have the right to invoke the appraisal process under your policy, which brings in a neutral third party to settle the disagreement.
Once the claim is approved, work with your contractor to schedule the work. You'll typically receive an initial check from your insurance company minus your deductible. A second check for the depreciation holdback (if you have RCV coverage) is released after the work is completed and documented.
Common Mistakes Illinois Homeowners Make
- Waiting too long to file — Storm damage worsens over time and policy deadlines are real. File within 30 days of the storm.
- Making repairs before the adjuster visits — Temporary tarping is fine but don't make permanent repairs until after the adjuster has documented the damage.
- Accepting the first offer without question — Insurance companies routinely underpay on first assessments. Always have a contractor review the scope before accepting.
- Choosing a contractor based on price alone — The cheapest bid often means cut corners, cheap materials, or a contractor who disappears after the job. Verify license, insurance, and BBB rating.
- Signing over your right to negotiate — Be careful with any document called an Assignment of Benefits. This signs your claim rights over to the contractor. A reputable contractor will never ask for this.
⚠️ Warning: Be extremely cautious of out-of-state contractors who appear after major storms offering free inspections and pushing you to sign contracts immediately. These storm chasers often disappear after collecting your insurance check. Always verify a contractor is licensed in Illinois — you can check at idfpr.illinois.gov. What Insurance Companies in Illinois Cover
Most standard Illinois homeowner's policies cover sudden storm damage from:
- Hail — the most common cause of roof claims in the Chicago suburbs
- Wind damage including torn or missing shingles
- Fallen trees or branches
- Lightning strikes
- Ice dams in some circumstances
Policies generally do NOT cover damage from normal wear and tear, lack of maintenance, or damage that existed before your policy was in force.

How Long Does the Process Take?
From initial inspection to completed roof, the typical timeline for an Illinois insurance claim is 3 to 6 weeks. Here's a rough breakdown:
- Initial inspection and filing: Day 1-3
- Adjuster inspection: 1-2 weeks after filing
- Scope of loss received: 1-2 weeks after adjuster visit
- Approval and scheduling: 1 week
- Roof replacement: 1-2 days for most homes
Complex claims, disputes, or supplement negotiations can extend this timeline. Having an experienced contractor managing the process on your behalf keeps things moving as efficiently as possible.
